An Audience's Starstruck Experience and Back

Last Saturday was the last day I had to do anything school-related for the semester. Despite my reluctance to go, it was nonetheless a requirement so I have to step up and just do my best. Our class went to watch a live taping of a local TV game show, and it was supposed to teach us about audience dynamics and the inner workings of a television station on the viewpoint of a show, and teach us it did. Every experience has its ups and downs, and here’s my wee two cents about everything that happened that day:

I was so paranoid that I was going to be late for the call time that I woke up at 4:30 A.M. an indecent hour for a student supposedly on vacation already, and it was a Saturday at that. But then I arrived at school at exactly 10 AM, but our bus left at around 11-11:30 or so. Add the fact that there were not enough seats, so my friends and I crammed our bodies into a two-seater when we are three. Plus, there was a little raining incident inside the bus because the aircon was leaking…. all in all, we should have paid a cheaper amount than what we had to pay. I was zonked out by the time we had to leave the university so I tried sleeping before arriving at the place. All too soon I was jostled awake by my seatmate and I blearily alternated between asking “We’re here already?” and looking outside the window. We thought we’d be going in immediately, but the anticipated studio tour (and the possibility of meeting David Archuleta in the very slim chance that he hasn’t left the country yet [he has already, but I can hope, can’t I?]) quickly went down the drain like the flood water that assailed us and left us stuck in the adjacent mall for about three and a half hours. And this was so not my lucky day as I spilled a total of three beverages and dropping my gum and being all sick when the actual show was on.

ANYWAYS, I sound like a whiny little kid. All in all the experience was astounding. First, we were waiting in line outside the guards were all cranky and scary. I was already tired from all the waiting we did and I was already sick on top of that, so I was really not feeling that enthusiastic about the whole thing that time. We were given paper bags that supposedly contained tumblers with the sponsors’ name on it…. but mine was empty. But no matter, I got a paper bag! :D (weird person, ignore.) And then we go into the studio, this huge area that seemd almost like a theme park with all those huge lights and the people. I’ve watched a Japanese drama called The Quiz Show II that was basically a drama about a live taping of a game show with mysterious happenings in it, and it made the happenings at the studio in between takes expected and totally surreal. Like how they cleaned up the confetti after the opening number and stuff, or how they change sets while the female hosts were doing spills at a different part of the studio. The staff were amazing in doing their work, efficient and almost synchronized in their movements. It was amazing that there were so many people at the stage at any particular time, and the people that show up on the screen are the ones that are completely necessary.

I was shocked by the opening number though. Girls wearing sexy clothes and revealing too much skin was never my taste. It feels somewhat degrading in some sense. It feels like they were almost naked and I didn’t like it >_< And slapstick comedy has its charms I suppose, but I never saw the humor in degrading other people’s appearance for the sake of a few laughs. Well if it’s in media that could mean more than a few laughs, but it never feels good. And the music was so loud, I went semi-deaf like Katniss Everdeen (of The Hunger Games trilogy; movie adaptation of first book now showing in theaters! /free advertising heehee) for about the duration of the show. I’m still experiencing the after-effects of me being sick from all the ruckus going on, but nevertheless with all the complaining I seem to be doing I did enjoy the whole experience.

And then, we go into the show itself. You can really see how people work in this show a lot. It’s really an eye-opener to the reality that is show business and life. Life is a huge game that you’ll never know what will happen. There was a time when a student from my school and a different school had to battle it out to get to the next level. And then the student from the versus school told how she joined the contest to help get money for her dad’s medicine, and I was saying that “It seems kinda pressuring to win against her” and “I think I’ll have guilty second thoughts of winning if I’m there facing a battle against her.” Or how people do things they wouldn’t normally do to get screentime, or money. I sound like a hypocrite, but with the financial quicksand that is vacation if I had a chance to win some money I’d go for it as well. A lot of books and fandom goods that amount of money can buy… but two of my classmates won! Good for them :)

And there was a part where the main host talked to us about the perks of working in the media industry. I didn’t like him much as a host (there were times when he was almost eating his words and I couldn’t understand what he was saying/promoting, and that couldn’t be beneficial to his sponsors, right? Not to mention the controversies he was involved with.) but when he talked to all three sections that came from my unversity and encouraged us to live out our dreams, his words struck a deep chord within my heart (wow poetic words where have you come from). Here was a man who was already living our dream. He’s able to bring so much to a lot of people’s lives, and he realizes his hold on people (although up to what extent I do not know). And here he was, on national television, encouraging us to follow what we wanted to be and giving us the boost we needed to be who we wanted to be. It was really an awe-inspiring moment, and there were tears in my eyes as I wondered if I could be like him and strike a difference in people’s lives. Him and his show was a beacon of hope for many of my fellow countrymen who had seemingly lost hope on life and simply got on by existing. He really did gave us something to believe in, that someday we could be like him. Though maybe in different settings, he gave us a chance to hope that someday, as an advertisement for Hitachi goes, we can “inspire the next”.
